Research

Short Description Of Research Highlights

The areas of research include characterization and structure elucidation of Bacteriocins
produced by Lactic acid bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are ubiquitous and are common
components of the human commensal Microflora. Bacteriocins produced from LAB or /and the
bacteria itself can be used as good solution to the problem of resurgence of resistant strains to
antibiotics as they have been recognized as safe and naturally occurring owing to the GRAS
status of of LAB. Characterization, identification and purification of bioactive compounds
produced by LAB strains especially bacteriocins find enormous application in the food and
pharmaceutical industries especially with respect to their possible function as biotherapeutic
agents leading to replacement of antibiotics at least for simple infections as well as due to their
potential application in the food industry as natural preservatives.
